Baltimore, Md. – Ripken Design and FIELDS, Inc. today announced plans to install a state-of-the-art synthetic field at Mount de Sales Academy in Catonsville, Maryland. The multi-use facility will feature hillside seating and accommodate all students through athletic competitions and physical education classes.
Ripken Design and FIELDS will work in tandem to design and construct the new 80,614-square-foot field, made of AstroTurf XPe synthetic turf. The primary use for the multi-purpose regulation field will be for soccer, lacrosse, softball and field hockey games, as well as physical education classes. The facility will also include a removable backstop for softball; a 200-meter track for increased flexibility, as well as a Mount de Sales Academy logo at midfield; bleacher seats accommodating more than 200 spectators; and a visitor’s plaza for school events.
“We are proud to be working with Mount de Sales Academy to create an innovative field that will help maximize student programming and athletic competition,” said Jim Arnold, Director of Projects at Ripken Design. “The high-quality playing surface will allow for year-round usage and is designed to keep maintenance needs to a minimum.”
The new facilities will serve all students through physical education classes, team competitions and intramural sports, while enabling more teams to utilize the field for practice space. The prior athletic field was constructed in 1981 and only served athletes participating in lacrosse and field hockey. The new facility will now serve all team sports at Mount de Sales Academy, including soccer; field hockey; lacrosse; and softball. The project also includes major landscaping surrounding the field, enhancing the overall beautification of the campus.
“We are honored to play a role in the creation of a state-of-the-art athletic centerpiece for such a historic school,” said FIELDS president and CEO, Brian Storm. “We are excited to have the opportunity to create such a versatile field that will provide Mount de Sales athletics with a facility they are proud to call home.”
“The new field project supports our mission, which is nurturing the “whole person,” said Sister Philip Joseph Davis, O.P., Director of Academy Advancement for Mount de Sales Academy. “Physical fitness, team competition, and school spirit are all encompassed in our responsibility to our students.”
The target completion date is August 2012, with a Dedication Ceremony set for the Academy’s Homecoming festivities on Saturday, October 6.
